* EMIGRANT: Whaling barque. One deck, a square stern, no galleries and a billethead. Sailed from New Bedford June 1st 1848, on a whaling cruise to the Indian Ocean. Captain Folger of the Monticello reported that the Emigrant foundered at sea about the 1st of April 1849 near L’Esperance Rock, (in the Kermadec group) Strong fears were held that all were lost. Parts of the vessel were picked up by the Montecello and the Burklay.
The Emigrant 178 tons, was built at Swansea, Massachusetts in 1833. Length 85ft. beam 22ft. depth 10ft. Part owner and master, Bartholomew West.
